Welcome to the twenty-sixth episode of the 'Week in a Nutshell’ series,
Summer started showing its effect on the tech news as they are slowing down. Microsoft's announcement for the layoff of 7,800 employees was the highlight of the week.
Microsoft announced a re-org targeting the phone business organization which will result as the layoff of around 7,800 employees. In addition, Microsoft also confirmed a write-off worth of $7.6 billion related to the acquisition of Nokia Devices and Services.
Future does not look bright for Windows Phone as the US market share dropped to 3% in Q1'2015. In his email to Microsoft employees, Satya Nadella stated that the focus will be on the first-party Windows phones in the short term. However, Satya Nadella wants the company to focus on creating new experiences across different devices and growing the Windows ecosystem in the long run.
I'm wondering how aggressive Microsoft's investments will be in Windows Phone in the future. I believe Microsoft will focus on different device categories in the future such as HoloLens and Surface Tablet.
